Bahawalnagar is located 260 km from Lahore on the west bank of Sutlej river near the India-Pakistan border. It was officially a part of Bahawalpur State. Sahiwal city is accessible by turning left on Sahiwal-Arifwala road on G. T. road.

Its old name was Rozanwali and the new name Bahawalnagar was named after Bahawal Khan V, the ruler of Bahawalpur state in 1904.


Bahawalnagar borders Bahawalpur, Okara, Pakpattan and Vihari districts. It is also connected to Rajasthan in India. It is also connected by railway to other cities of Pakistan, as it was an important railway junction before independence in 1947.


Bahawalnagar railway station was an important railway junction before partition. It was a busy junction between Bahawalnagar and Bathinda, used by trains from Karachi to Delhi. The railway station building is attractive with a beautiful dome roof.

The shrine of Tajuddin Chishti is located in the village of Chishtian. Sheikh Khwaja Tajuddin Chishti, also known as Taj Sarwar Chishti, was a Sufi saint of the Chishti order. He was the grandson of Sheikh Fariduddin Ganj Shakar in Pakpattan. From the Niazi Bus Terminal on the main Bahawalpur Bahawalnagar Road, a small road leads to the Tajuddin Chishti Shrine.


The Hakra civilization covers an area near Fort Abbas above the dried-up channel of a river that is a tributary of the Ghaggar River in India. The Sutlej River changed its course about eight to ten thousand years ago, leaving the Ghaggar-Hakkara as monsoon rivers and transforming the Thar Desert region. For Abbas, the ancient Hakra of 5000 BC is the center of civilization.


Mahalnagar Mall is a beautiful historic mansion located in the heart of Manchanabad city, 35 km from Bahawalnagar city on the Manchanabad-Bahawalnagar road. It was built in 1930 by two brothers Nagar Mal and Bhajanlal. It is a private property of the Sukhira family, anyone can visit with their permission.

Fort Marut is located on the India-Pakistan border in the town of Marut in Bahawalnagar, 50 km from Fort Abbas. Marut town has some other important forts like Jamgarh, Mirgarh and Majgarh. Mirgarh is a beautiful fort in the sand dunes of the Cholistan desert in the city of Marut. Nowadays, all these forts are in bad condition due to environmental conditions and erosion facts. If the government does not take any serious steps to restore these forts, they will disappear in the next few years.


Most areas of Bahawalnagar are known for agriculture, especially for wheat and sugarcane and cotton. There are also important industries like textile spinning, sugar manufacturing etc. Canals from the Sulaimanki headworks are used to irrigate the vast land of Bahawalnagar for agriculture. Due to this water, the mostly desert area becomes fertile land producing various crops.

Due to the Cholistan desert, the climate of Bahawalnagar is very hot in summer and mild in winter. In summer, the temperature rises above 50 degrees Celsius.
